BLOG: a freeware Blogger equivalent

Be prepared for a few glitches again. While I was looking for something else, I came across a freeware program simply called "Blog". Fahim Farook is the author. Apparently, he experienced some of the same issues with Blogger(tm) that I did, and decided to simplify the entire process by writing his own version. It is a masterful piece of work.

For those who are running a webserver on a local machine, this software performs posting and weblog maintenance directly to the hard drive. If you're not at home and have the urge to write, it can also update your weblog remotely via FTP. All this and it's ad-free and costs nothing (although you're welcome to donate).

It's my belief that as we all become more comfortable with web-based services, even many of us taciturn seniors will want to cut loose and run our own shows. Many who have nothing to say have much to write. And publishing yourself via a blog is to the generation of today what the vanity press was to those of former times. With the increasing concentration of the media, we may find ourselves turning to each other for more interesting and less uniform news and (certainly) opinion.

Meanwhile, back to the learning curve.

Mon Oct-27-2003         Note: I have had some problems in trying to run BLOG under Windows 2000.  There is a very responsive support forum on Farook's site, so it shouldn't take long to sort things out.  -bh
